This patient came to Dr. Cole with a severely depleted scalp donor area after multiple previous hair transplant procedures.
His original strip procedure had been successful, but there was not enough remaining donor coverage for another strip procedure without risking a visible scar. He later underwent an ARTAS FUE procedure at another practice. Unfortunately, almost none of those grafts grew, leaving his remaining scalp donor supply severely compromised.
With limited scalp hair available, Dr. Cole turned primarily to beard hair as an alternative donor source.
The FUE hair restoration was completed over two procedures:
First procedure: 3,295 beard grafts.
Second procedure: 3,575 beard grafts, 341 scalp grafts, and 100 chest-hair grafts.
Total: 6,970 grafts, including 6,529 beard grafts, 341 scalp grafts, and 100 chest-hair grafts.
During the first procedure, SMP was also performed on the previous strip scar. CRP was injected into the recipient and scalp donor areas, while PRF and ACell were applied to the beard donor area.
This challenging repair case shows how beard and body hair can expand the available donor supply when previous procedures have left the scalp donor area severely depleted.
