Transection occurs when hair bulbs, which generate new hairs, are cut during follicle removal or otherwise receive harm. Avoiding transection is critical, as every patient has a finite amount of donor hair available. Transection rates will depend on the skill of the physician and the precision of the tools they use. Expert physicians typically have a transaction rate around 5%, while less skilled physicians may have rates between 20% and 75%. Dr. Cole’s average transection rate is under 3% and often lower.

FUE grafts range from one to a few follicles. Transection occurs when the follicles are cut or otherwise damaged during removal. These grafts will not develop and grow after a transplantation.

FUE transection rate, therefore, is a common way to measure a technique's, procedure's, or surgeon's effectiveness; the higher the rate, the less effective a result. Dr. Cole's transection rate averages 3% or under, exceptional within the hair restoration industry. There are a few different factors that effect transection rates:

Instruments or devices have a major role in transection rates. Specialists should replace their punch, the instrument most common for extracting follicles, every 400 to 1000 extractions, as after this amount the blade irrevocably dulls. Punches are both very small and very sharp, making it impossible to resharpen them after dulling. Automated and robotic devices also varying transections rates; ARTAS, for instance, has an average 10% transection rate.
