How Much Will Hair Restoration Cost?

When deciding whether to undergo hair transplant surgery, a universal concern is how much hair restoration will cost. In recent years, not only has the quality of hair restoration increased dramatically but so has the value. The ability for hair restoration surgeons to do larger sessions has led to cost efficiencies which are transferred to patients. This is great news for anyone interested in hair transplantation but worried about hair restoration costs.
Hair restoration cost will depend on a number of factors and can vary quite considerably. Most physicians charge a set price per graft. Each graft will contain between 1 and 4 (or possibly more) hairs. Some doctors will offer discounts if you have more than a set number of grafts transplanted.

The Number of Grafts You Will Require

First and foremost, the cost of your hair restoration surgery will depend on the number of grafts you are having transplanted. This number will be determined based on the extent of your hair loss, anticipated future hair loss, your own preference and your surgeon’s recommendation. Some patients prefer to break a large number of grafts into two or more sessions, while others prefer to get as much as possible done in a single one. Your available budget and the number of grafts you need will play perhaps the biggest role in determining your total hair restoration cost.

Type of Procedure

Hair restoration cost will vary depending on whether you undergo strip or FUE surgery. FUE is more time-consuming and taxing on the surgeon and will therefore tend to cost a bit more. However, specialized FUE procedures, such as the Cole Isolation Technique (CIT) allow the physician to cherry-pick the grafts that will provide the most density. This means you will receive more transplanted hairs for the number of grafts you pay for.

Choice of Surgeon

The surgeon you select to perform your procedure will have a large affect on your total hair restoration cost. As a general rule of thumb, a price that sounds too good to be true likely is. However, it is important to understand that a higher cost does not necessarily mean you will receive better results. Sometimes the difference in physicians’ price per graft comes down to their overhead cost (based on their facility or geographical region), rather than any actual difference in skill or expertise. You are better off NOT basing your final hair restoration surgeon decision on price, but rather a combination of patient reviews, results photos/videos and your personal impression of the physician and staff.

Travel Costs

In order to seek out the best surgeon and results, many patients travel for their hair transplant surgery. This naturally affects your total hair restoration cost. Many doctors will offer a travel discount for those patients that are traveling from out of town or even out of the country. You can also generally request a list of recommended hotels that offer discounted rates for patients of certain clinics.

Additional Fees

Some clinics tack on ancillary charges which add to your total hair restoration cost. Look out for additional fees for such things as medication, anesthesia, blood tests and facility fees. Keep in mind that some or all of these fees may be built into the per-graft price.
When thinking about your total hair restoration cost, you may also want to consider budgeting for hair care products designed specifically for the special needs of post-transplant patients. The Hair Cycle line, for example, was physician-formulated specifically for patients to use after undergoing hair restoration surgery. Their line includes all-natural products, including a gentle sulfite-free shampoo and a post-biotin spray to accelerate healing of the recipient sites.
