Traction Alopecia

Postby keratin » Wed Aug 16, 2006 9:33 am

Hi,

Have you treated any people with traction alopecia? I seem to have extensive loss around the front of my scalp, from ear to ear in a circumference.

Due to the inability to take a long strip of donor hair, I will probably need multiple strip sessions. And the cases of body hair transplants look very interesting.

Whats the lowest density per cm2, a person with coarse hair could get away with on the sides of the scalp and front third?

In cases of traction alopeica, the most important thing is to stop styling your hair in the way that causes the alopecia. Sometimes there is enough damage to the scalp tissues that it can affect the yield of transplant. In most cases, transplant to correct traction alopecia can still have successful yield.

Multiple strip sessions are not normally recommended. Perhaps you could look into FIT options to minimize donor scarring. Body hair is an option, but it comes with risks and unpredictable variables because it is a newer procedure. Scalp hair is recommended for frontal hair lines, but a mixture of body and scalp can turn out nicely as well.

The number of grafts needed depends on the size of the area of loss, hair characteristics, etc. Pictures are needed in order to make an estimate. You can email your pictures to consults@forhair.com if you would like a photo consultation. Your pictures and information will be submitted to Dr. Cole for review and recommendations.
