Actually, Nizoral shampoo was designed to treat Seborrheic Dermatitis ( Dandruff/Dry Scalp) It comes in two forms, one percent ( over the counter ) and two percent ( prescription ) I would highly recommend getting the 2 percent if you have good insurance. I have been working in the Dermatology field for over 10 years now and Nizoral shampoo is the best shampoo for Dandruff. It comes out pink and does not have that bad tar smell like the others do. The active ingredient in it is ketoconazole. I have used this shampoo and I love the results it gives me for my dandruff.
As far a promoting hair growth, One 1998 study showed that prescription-strength Nizoral, which contains 2% ketoconazole, worked just as well as minoxidil (brand name Rogaine) in men with androgenic alopecia (male hereditary balding). Both medicines increased hair thickness and increased the number of anagen-phase hair follicles on the scalp.
Dr. Cole gave me a new prescription for the Nizoral 2% shampoo. I am going to use it twice a week and use the Hair Cycle shampoo the rest of the time.
