When evaluating a patient the doctor must try to come to some conclusions about what can be achieved, in the long term and in short term. The doctor needs to balance alot of variables (nw class, donor area, worse case scenario, hair quality, patient goals). With a 28 year old class 5 the doc knows what he is dealing with to some extent. There are some tell-tale signs at this point for where this person's hair loss might be headed. For a 21 year old NW 3 the future is not so clear in most cases. In this case it is very hard for a surgeon to balance issues of coverage, density, patients goals etc because he does not have a clear picture of the patients possible progression.
phillipedes262, you are a young guy and a cautious one aswell. But I do not feel that you are a "young patient" in terms being a poor candidate for surgery.
BTW a 31 year old class 6 is a candidate if he has the donor area to combat his hair loss.
These are some ideas. I'm sure the doctors might give some other thoughts on the matter that differ from my own.
Notice: I am not a doctor. My opinions are not necessarily those of Dr Cole. My advice is not medical advice.
