The new storage medium and controlled temperature environment may be paying off. We call the new system the Graft Optimization Device (GOD). The storage environment is kept at a constant 3 or 4 degrees celsius. the storage medium contains antioxidants designed to quench free radicals. it also is a cold storage solution. It has a higher concentration or osmotic gradient than tradtional storage solutions. the ratonale is simple. cold storage paralyses the cell membrane so that fluid (predominantely water) is not pumped across the membrane when the volume increases internally. the large molecules inside the cell create an osmotic gradient that draws water into the cell. if the pump is broken, the cell will swell and eventually burst. most physicians use a hypotonic solution and cold storage. this actually kills cells by causing them to burst. It is also very bad for cells to have a fluctuating temperature. The GOD creates an ideal constant environment temperature enviroment that is ideal for the hypertonic cold storage solutions.
