pimples Vs. Cysts in hair transplant surgery

Postby drcole » Mon Oct 04, 2004 5:51 am

The pimples are simply a reaction to the retained hair fragments in grafts that are not growing new hair yet. Remember that the hairs are shed from the grafts about 2 to 3 weeks after a procedure. only about 10% will remain and continue to grow. 90% are shed typically. the hairs that are suppossed to be shed sometimes do not fall out. they sit in the skin and cause a reactive inflamation similar to pimples. Once the hairs are shed, the pimples resolve themselves. popping the pimple often pushes the hair out.

cysts can form, as well. these are either due to retained hair fragments or ingrown hairs. if they do not resolve, we need to resolve them for you. the ones that do not resolve generally result from pushing the graft deep into the skin or inserting the graft upside down. in other words, these are due to poor technique. retained hair fragments resolve by getting the retained hair out generally.

oily skin results in a much higher frequency of these bumps. i do not know why. the betadine shampoo did not damage the grafts. it simply helped to remove the retained hair fragments.

pimples also occur just prior to growth. this is quite common. as the new hairs begin to grow, some hit the surface and have trouble getting out. this too sets up an inflamatory response that causes pimples. popping the pimples solves the problem. the problem is typically self limiting. proper hygiene on your part will solve your own problem.

Hydrogen peroxide is not a good idea for optimal graft health. Avoid this. Try to squeeze or pop the pimples. Also you can add Neosporin.
