Hi Margie,
We are happy to have you here, Hair loss in women can be very painful, i can't imagine how hard it is for you, It can be far more painful then men hair loss... since men hair loss is accaptable to some degree.
Your 2 options is a good hair system or hair transplant, it doesn't neccesery need to be the FIT, you can also do the strip if you don't mind having a scar in the back of your head were your hair is long and can easily cover it.
We see women coming to our clinic, i can't tell you how much percent but we have good success with this type of work. recently i saw a African-American woman that came for a follow up after 5 month done on the sides of the head above the ears and to the temples, this area is really hard to do... i was surprised to see the excellent growth after only 5 month's.
We also did some eye-brows hair transplants recently on womens with good success. we have one women on the patient gallery and we have more results, but it is hard to get womens to allow us to post their photos, they don't want to be exposed.
the fact that you have a curly gray hair ,coarse with a good density is very good, we will need to see tour photos to get more ideas about your options.
i know you can't travel so you have 2 options:
1. To wait for the NY seminar in November 6, 2004. if you want to register please sign up from this page: Seminars
2. you can feel up the Virtual consultation form in our website and upload some photos, this will make life easier for you and for us, go to this page:
Virtual Consultation

Thank you very much for your interest in IHTI, We will do everything in our power to help you :)

Female Hair Loss

Postby drcole » Mon Aug 09, 2004 9:41 pm

It has been interesting to see the change in our patient base as we have moved completely away from conventional advertising. As far as i know, i do not even have a listing in the telephone directory these days. 100% of my work is due to word of mouth and most of this comes directly off the internet chat rooms, etc. I guess that doing your best and achieving a good outcome has been beneficial to our practice. Marriot was correct, if you take care of the customer, the customers will find you, you will not need to look for them.

Women are far more tuned into conventional advertising modes. I worked for a larger group for one year to see how i would like it. This group did television adds, etcs. I was amazed how many women we treated from these television advertisements. We also saw far more women when we advertised in the news paper and in the yellow pages. We don't see as many women now. I am sure this will all change as women become more comfortable with the internet as a consumer awarness source.

Women are either treatable or not treatable by hair transplant surgery. If the donor area is full and thick on the sides and back, you are a candidate for a surgical hair resotoration procedure. if the density is not good, i typicallly discourage surgery.

women are good candiates for the procedure and typically do very well, except that their hair loss often gets worse over time. accordingly, they must expect to come back periodically to fill in new areas of loss.

i recomend that you consider oral spironolactione, which is a diuretic, to help with your hair loss provided that the biopsy you had is accurate. some women appear to respond to proscar, but this can cause birth defects should they become pregant with a male child. studies indicated that proscar and propecia would not work in women, but some women have responded.

hair loss is worse psychologically in women if you ask me. from a psychological point of view, it is not expected in women. at least in men, hair loss can be anticipated. still many men are just as upset about thier hair loss as you are. we feel for you. try these medications and also consider some concealors such as toppik, dermatch, and couvre. if these do not work, you sound like you will be a good candidate for surgery.

fit vs strip

Postby drcole » Mon Aug 09, 2004 9:44 pm

In women, strip removal makes a great deal of sense. some do not like the idea of having a scalpel remove a wedge for skin from the back and sides of their heads, however. for these individuals, fit may be a good option. if you are comfortable with the wedge removal, then strips are a good alternative for women.
