saw palmetto for hair loss?

Postby ounce999 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 2:12 pm

Hi, I read on the website that saw palmetto is helpful in reducing/stopping hairloss. How much should someone take though? I am 29, about 6' tall and weigh about 185 lb. Are there any particular brands/products that you recommend? I read elsewhere a while back that it has to be extract from the berries to be effective... is that true? I have been using saw palmetto 450 mg that i bought online from puritans pride, which sells herbs/vitamins, etc. The bottle doesnt specify if it comes from any part of the plant though... thoughts?

You can get some answers on this article:
Saw Palmetto for Hair Loss

In theory alone, Saw Palmetto act like finasteride by helping those suffering from BPH (The theorized reason for its effectivity is that it suppresses the enzyme called 5-alpha reductase which in turn prevents the production of the potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from the hormone testosterone).
So in theory it might work as a treatment for hair loss but there are no studies to date that support this claim. Also, because there has been no formal studies, dosage and how it should be used (orally or topically) is also a guess. If you check the article above you can see Dr. Cole recommendations on how to use and the dosage.
