topical vs oral penatration of drugs

Postby nobel victim » Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:39 pm

Are there any studies which compare the oral and the topical dose required of drugs (Obviously I'm thinking about duasteride or proscar, but there may be a more generic study which could prove the rule if not the specific case) to reach a certain level of saturation in the scalp? It would be great to know that say a 2% solution of proscar in an alcohol base would = a 6mg dose administered orally.

Very best to you all

I asked Dr. Cole about your inquiry and he is not aware of any studies comparing oral and topical use of the hair loss drugs you mention. However, he notes that combining Propecia and Avodart can have a good local effect. Avodart gel caps can be pierced and squirted right in to the mixture; Propecia will need to be crushed and then combined. You can use grain alcohol and strain the crushed pills through a filter (most of the white powder is starch and will be filtered right out). Propylene glycol can also be used as part of the delivery vehicle as it will stabilize the mixture and make it oilier. However, use caution with this as many people tend to be allergic to propylene glycol.

HI Emilie,

Barring the filtering step that's my basic hombrew regime, 10 0.5mg dutas & 2 5mg proscar (crushed to powder)- so 10mg of each drug, and added to 125ml of Xandrox 15% (which seems to combine very nicely xandrox has Propylene glycol in an alcohol base). Obviously the dose is somewhat arbitrary!

Thanks again
