Few general questions for post surgery care

Postby ChuckC » Sun Aug 16, 2009 5:09 am

First a little background. I'm 26 years old and I started losing my hair when I was about 17 years old. The loss was pretty gradual so until about 1 year ago I could still wear my hair pretty short. Then it got to the point where I lost a little too much and had to wear my hair a little longer to cover up the thinning hair in the front of my head. So, about 8 months ago I started taking propecia and I haven't noticed any hair loss since then so I think it's working pretty well and I plan to continue using it.

Now, I wanted to restore my frontal hairline and thicken up the hair in the front of my scalp so I could wear short hair again. I just had 1500 grafts done to the front part of my scalp. I'm currently living in Seoul, South Korea and had the surgery done and the Forhair Apgujeong branch. I'm really pleased with the results. I posted a couple pics from about 10 days after the surgery. Just pics I snapped myself.

Anyway, I notice a lot of people saying you should wait until you get a bit older to see how much hair you will lose. I didn't really think this was relevant since the propecia is working for me and I have no problem continuing to use it. If I continue using propecia, should I still expect to lose more hair further down the road?

Secondly, I'm a pretty active person and I regularly work out in a boxing gym and usually do quite a bit of sparring. I'm just wondering how long I have to wait to get back to working out there. I don't have to spar and I realize I should wait a while before starting that again. But how long should I wait until I can just do the regular stuff (jumping rope, hitting the heavy bag, etc.). And also, how long should I wait before sparring again. When I spar I do wear headgear and most of the damage is done to the face and forehead, not too much on the scalp, but the risk of being hit there is still present.

Thanks for the help.

Will Propecia ever stop working?

Postby forhair » Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:06 am

I am glad to hear that you had a good experience. Good luck and happy growing :)
Propecia mostly prevents hair loss (slowing down/stopping existing hair loss). In only a small percent it will re-grow hair. Eventually propecia will lessen over time and probably stop working at some point, when? no one knows and each patient will have a different effect.
If the propecia effects over time will decrease you should not stop using it because you will lose all the benefits of the drug over the previous years within months upon stopping it. A good solution is switching to Avodart.
In your age it's a catching game...you will probably loose some existing hairs down the road and will need to add some more grafts if you care about it.
As for going back to boxing after the HT, you should be ok after 2 weeks. Just cover your hair and don't let the opponent pull your hair as a part of the combat :)
