topical spironolactone in the treatment of hair loss

Postby drcole » Sat May 29, 2004 2:47 pm

The antiandrogenic effects of oral spironolactone are well known. oral spironolactone is often used to treat women with hair loss due to androgens. it is not used in men because it can cause gynecomastia or an enlargement of the breasts similar to female breast tissue.

Topically spironolactone does act as a local antiandrogen. Does is stop hair loss or promote new hair growth? This has not been adequately studied. There are many individuals who do not belive that finasteride is effective or that it is dangerous. many of these individuals use topical spironolactone.

i reserve my opinions about the effectiveness of medical products to those products which have been formally studied and shown to have an effect one way or the other. i do not believe that studies to date provide conclusive evidence one way or the other regarding topical spironolactone in the treatment of hair loss due to androgenic alopecia. most of the reports i've gotten regarding topical spironolactone are ancedotal.

Hair loss is a very serious problem for many men and women. generally, people with hair loss are willing to try most any product that has the potential to improve their situation and is safe if it might reduce their hair loss or improve the hair loss. therefore, i encourage you to form your own opinions regarding topical spironolactone and make your decisions based on these opinions.

these comments on topical spironolactone are meant to help you make an independent opinion. there is no FDA approved study that endorses topical spironolactone as a product to treat hair loss due to androgenic alopecia.
