propecia and pregnant women?

Postby rowdyone82 » Wed Mar 28, 2007 12:05 am

I have heard of this before, and so I enclosed a copy of the warnings on a propecia, proscar, or any of these drugs.

"Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. The medication could be absorbed through the skin. Finasteride is known to cause birth defects in a developing male baby. Exposure to whole tablets should be avoided whenever possible, however exposure to whole tablets is not expected to be harmful as long as the tablets are not swallowed."

Now my question is, if a female touchs the pill or the crushed pill, while she is pregnant........ what about if she is impregnated while you are currently taking propecia? is there a possiblty that the baby could be harmed? not really sure what to make of this......... any insight would help.......

No... she has to touch it or take it. I hope this answers your question.

Actually!!! it will because it will have the same effect as AIDS which you get from having unprotected sex(blood is transfered from very small veins on the penis to very small veins in Vagina wich are exposed from the friction). Propecia is in out blood stream hence the female will get exposure to the Propecia however I dont know how much of it will actually effect the baby.

Wassup,

The effect of Prepecia is on the development of a male baby not female.

From what I have read it is important that the mother not be in contact with the substance, not the father. This could easily be verified by many different online sources. For example this link from Merck may be of some interest.

FINASTERIDE AND BIRTH DEFECTS

There are very few more anxiety provoking times in anyone’s life than possibly causing a birth defect in one’s own unborn child. So, it’s quite understandable that the mention of a possible birth defect with the use of finasteride (Propecia 1mg and Proscar 5mg, Merck) would cause considerable anxiety and concern. The package insert for Proscar states under the section on Contraindications: “Because of the ability of Type II 5alpha reductase inhibitors to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, finasteride may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus of a pregnant woman who receives finasterideâ€

PROPECIA is for MEN ONLY

Postby FIThair » Mon Sep 17, 2007 11:26 am

Your husband can take PROPECIA if you are trying to conceive or if your are currently pregnant. However, women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use PROPECIA and should not handle crushed or broken tablets of PROPECIA because doing so may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs.

hair loss and pregnancy

Postby drcole » Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:36 pm

i would look for an alternative reason you are loosing your hair during pregnancy other than androgenic alopecia. propecia typically does not work in women anyway. typically hair increases during pregnancy. try evaluating your thyroid and check yourself of anemia first. once you rule out any medical conditions including arthritis, you might find an appropriate treatment. until you know the cause, you really should not consider any treatment.
