Hi
This is all new to me
My hair has been thinning for some time now (like 2-5 years) and I have tried 2 topical treatments but I saw Oprah one day and they had a show about this lady who said that women can take Propecia. Does it really work?

Propecia And Women Hair Loss

Postby forhair » Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:05 am

Well Kia, I will not recommend women to use propecia , there are unknown risks of female cancer like breast cancer and uterine...
"Use of Propecia in women of child-bearing age can cause birth defects, specifically a deformity in the growth of the urethra of the penis, known as hypospadias. In fact, simply handling the pills can cause some absorption of the medication and increase the risk of birth defects, therefore Propecia is only prescribed for women after menopause."

Pregnant women should not take or even be exposed to it.
However, there are women who reported on a good success with Propecia (finasteride) and it did work for them, the problem is the lack of studies and basically you are taking a risk.
This Study suggest that 62% of the female patients that took Propecia (finasteride), 2.5 mg/dv were showing "some improvement"...but the Study is from 2006 and the long term effects on female cancer risks as i said before are just not well known.

Hi,

Propecia is used to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head) in men only. Propecia is for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men only and should NOT be used by women or children.

There have been studies done overseas with women but this medication is not FDA approved for women to use. We can definitely help you with other options once you contact our office or submit this online form: http://www.forhair.com/contact_page.htm

I hope that this response is informative for you. Please call us if you have any questions.

Women and Propecia

Postby forhair » Tue Oct 28, 2008 5:51 am

Andy, there is a risk for women to take propecia and it's definately not recommended but there are women who take Propecia (finasteride) and it has worked for them, so it is up to the patient to take the risk.
A big no is for pregnant women and i quote:
Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use PROPECIA and should not handle crushed or broken PROPECIA tablets because the active ingredient may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed.

Don't even think about taking Propecia while your pregnancy... only if your hair is more precious to you then your own child!

After delivery your hair will be back - it's just temporary.
