Propecia & Avodart

Postby tbmax » Tue Dec 05, 2006 6:00 am

I have been taking Propecia for 4-5 years now, and am feeling like it is starting to loss its effect. I have heard numerous things about Avodart (think it has another name, but not sure), but when I talk to my doctor he says that he only knows about Propecia. He is a new doctor to me, and I would really like to find more info about switching. Does anybody know what the difference is and how I can find a doctor in the Tampa Bay, FL area that will be able to assist me?

Thank you so much for all your help!

Medical therapy

Propecia is typically the first line of defence against hairloss. Avodart may be a consideration.

We may be able to prescribe Avodart or an topical alternative if you feel that your treatment with Propeica has run its course.

Firstly we need to do a consult with you to determine what course is appropriate. We have a photo consult options whereby your photos and medical history are reviewed and a recommendations is given.

You can call the office for more information - 800 368 4247 - or simply send along you photos to

Indicate that you are looking for an alternative to Propecia.

Propecia - I was told that pregnant women must not handle

Postby Andrew H » Thu Dec 07, 2006 6:58 am

I have just been prescribed Propecia and hopefully it well help.
Only time will tell . My hair restoratation surgery was carried
out in South Korea .

I have bought a 3 months supply of Propecia of which was 162,000
WON .

The Korean pharmacist explained to me that pregnant women must
not handle this drug as it may prove fatle .

I wonder is it safe to use Propecia and Saw Palmetto and the new
Rogaine foam altogther ...and is it worth it ?
As it maybe a costly venture ; any advice is alwys welcome .

My hair restoration surgery took place on November 4th 2007.

Propecia and Minox

Postby FITLocks » Thu Dec 07, 2006 9:23 am

Using Propecia and Saw Palmetto may be somewhat redundant. On the other hand many physicians feel that using Propecia in combination with Minox has a synergistic effect. Many of our patients use Fin and Minox together aswell as using Nizoral and Hair Cycle Shampoo.

I have read that avodart has longer lasting side effects. Can anyone expand on this? Also, if one were to switch from propecia to avodart after using propecia for about 6 years, does anyone know if further hair loss could result?

Propecia and avodart are both working in a very similar way by inhibits the 5ARI (enzyme 5 alpha-reductase) conversion of testosterone into DHT.
The difference is that avodart is a dual 5ARI for the treatment of BPH and inhibits both the type I and type II isoenzymes. Propecia inhibits the Type I form of the enzyme only.
So it is unlikely that switching from propecia to avodart will results in hair loss. I know some patients that reported the oposite...switching triggered new hair growth...

But I've read on other forums that Adovart clears up acne in some people and causes acne in others...

The herb saw palmetto works the same way that the Propecia drug does. The saw palmetto hair loss treatment is proven to suppress the DHT buildup in the scalp, improving the state of your hair, making it thicker, fuller and healthier. Leimo is an organic based treatment made up of saw palmetto extracts.

There is no science that shows that saw palmetto in a shampoo stops or reverses hair loss. This is simply an effort to market another shampoo that has saw plametto in it as a proven method to treat hair loss.
