The effect of anesthesia on graft growth

Postby Sweet Cheeks » Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:46 am

Dr Cole,

I rec'd 1491 grafts last july and will be scheduled for surgery on my shoulder on 11/16. Will anesthesia and general surgical trauma affect my growth at this point? I hear so much about associated hairloss and anesthesia. Is there any truth to it or is it a myth? I am very concerned b/c my growth is real good so far.

Best

general anesthesia surgery and hair loss

Postby drcole » Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:35 pm

there is definately a risk of hair loss from general anesthesia. there are many potential causes including loss on the back of you sclap if they do not turn your head enough. medications can also cause hair loss.

good luck

Good luck with your shoulder surgery, can't they make you a local anesthesia?
with local anesthesia (the anesthesia we use in the office) there is no risk of hair loss...

i doubt they will do a sholder surgery under local anesthesia.

the risk of hair loss is not greatt with general anesthesia, but it is well documented.

Thanks for the responses gents.

well I will be getting a scalene nerve block and some general.

So then I am at risk? If they do fall out is there a chance they will grow back? Temp hairloss?-

Man I hope it doesnt screw up my growth b/c so far it's 3 mos post op and its growing each week. :) I have been using hair cycle shampoo/conditioner and nizoral with occasional tricomin revitalizing shampoo.

hair loss and general anesthesia

most likely it will not. while hair loss is well recognized in the literature from general, not local anesthesia, it is not all that common. you will most likely do fine. I had it for my wisdom teeth and did just fine. Hope the same for you.
