How much does Propecia effect your Liver??

Postby sentarli » Sat Sep 09, 2006 3:43 am

I dont know if studies have been made of Propecia being taken for more then 10 years, I would actually like to know what effect Propecia has on the Long term life span of the Liver. I read on the prospectus of Propecia that people with Liver abnormalities should not take Propecia, a bit worried about this.

propecia and the liver

Postby drcole » Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:25 pm

when medications are metabolised in the liver, it is generally recomended that the person with severe liver disease avoid the product. why? if the liver is responsible for flushing the medication out of your system, you don't want to take the medication should your liver not work properly. there are no reports of propecia causing liver damage.

In short, if your liver is not working properly, you will not be able to get rid of the propecia so you should not take it.

Propecia for hair loss

Propecia is metabolized in the liver and eliminated by the kidneys and in the feces. it does not have any adverse affects on the liver.

Propecia has been used over a decade

Postby forhair » Wed Oct 18, 2006 8:53 am

This study was to prove results and monitor side effects.
Propecia is been used since 1990 and until now it is considered to be very safe and i haven't heard of any patient that had cancer.
Also, I have not seen anyone who stayed on Propecia go bald, but I have seen many, many men who were taking it and decided to stop, who then went either very bald or very thin.

i believe that propecia is all that we have for the moment in our hands ,
for fighting the cause of hairloss . On the other hand , i believe that propecia slows down the hairloss but it is for me difficult to accept that a person of early hairloss stage 1-2 , who is programed for stage 6 , can
stay at stage 2 for the rest of his life ,with propecia . This does not mean
that this 'slow down ' is not important and helpfull for many people .
Surely propecia , is a hope .

propecia for hair loss

Postby drcole » Wed Oct 18, 2006 6:30 pm

no, 5 years is not enough time to acess the saftey of a medication. most likely propecia will prove to be quite safe with a reduction in the risk of prostate cancer, but it is still too early to say for absolute certainty. check back in on this subject in 25 years.

this answer , i give also to myself ,dr Cole , anybody who has some
questions on this drug ,and hesitate to take it , just do not have the benefits . After 10 not 25 years , i beleive this field will be different ,like
if we compare present comparing to 10 years before . (new closure technics , fue ,body hair etc etc ) .

you are absolutely right. Many things may likely change even in the next 5 years. one of the reasons i feel propecia is reasonably safe is that it will most likley be replaced by something better in due course. finasteride has been around since the late 1980s and it has a long saftey record over that time. Having said this, it is always possible that someone may develop a condition we do not know about for many years from taking propecia. it was only because they designed a new study to look at new indications for vioxx that we discovered it increased the risk of vascular diseases. if they had not stated new studies, Merck might still be producing vioxx and they would not be defending themselves in multiple legal battles with patients who had complications from vioxx.
