Below are the pictures of a patient who visited Dr. Cole and the IHTI team 13 months ago for an FIT procedure of 3000 scalp grafts and 700 body hair grafts. This individual had advanced hair loss with a bald surface area of over 200 cm2. The goal of the initial surgery was to 1) create coverage in the frontal and the midscalp areas and 2) reduce the size of the bald crown. Most physicians will heavily treat the frontal area without attempting to cut down the size of the crown. Such an approach does not honor the natural progression of hair loss. Dr. Cole on the other hand has a more aesthetic ethos for hair restoration and therefore it was imperative to reduce the size of the crown in addition to treating the front and top. The majority of the scalp grafts were placed over an area of 120 cm2. The BHT graft were placed into an area of 50cm2. After more than a year of growth the results are impressive and give a natural thinning appearance to this former Norwood Class 6. This past week the patient returned to IHTI for an additional 5000 grafts of scalp and body hair. A significant number of the body hair grafts were “FIT Farmed” into fresh scalp hair extraction sites to replenish the donor area.

^^^ had the opportunity to do a hair count study for this case. 13 months ago 165 BHT/BFIT grafts were placed into the an isolated part of the patient’s crown. Quite interestingly, ^^^ noted 157 1-hair grafts and 8 2-hair grafts in this area. This correlates to a 100% yield. While this is only a small sample study we are very excited about these recent developments.

In some cases, the amount of loss is greater than the amount of scalp donor available to a patient. Some patients are not sure how far their hair loss will progress in the future, so they are reserving their scalp hair in case they need it. Scalp hair can be more effective for detailed hairline work. Body hair is a good "filler" for thickening areas. It enhances the coverage that scalp hair transplant provides and gives a light overall coverage without scalp hair mixed in.

There are many reasons to use body hair. Basically, it depends on a patient's specific and individual needs. When donor resources and further loss are concerns, it is nice to have body hair as an extra option.

We are constantly trying to come up with new ways to add value to our surgeries. For instance, we have a FIT Farming procedure. This is where we perform an FIT, moving scalp hair from the donor to the recipient areas. Then we add an extra step by harvesting body hairs and placing them into the areas where we extracted the scalp hairs. This decreases the depletion fo the donor and helps with donor healing.

The ergonomics of body hair transplants also adds an advantage to our surgeries. When all of the surgery takes place on the head, there are a limited number of people who can work at one time. The doctor can be extracting hairs in the donor while two people place grafts. With body hair, especially with leg hair, you can have three doctors extracting grafts. This can greatly increase the daily yield, so more grafts can be harvested in a shorter amount of time. It also allows the patient to change positions during the surgery for more comfort.

Basically, patients come to us with needs, so we try to create new ways to provide for the people who previously had little or no options available to them.

Every patient is different and is a different case.
There is absolutely no comparison between wassup and the italian patient...they are completely different cases but both with excellent results.

The italian patient had only 1 session of 3000 on a large balding area (norwood 6), his hair characteristics also different.
wassup is a perfect candidate, he had a smaller area to cover (norwood 4) and he had around 8000 grafts.
It is like for en example filling a small garden with big trees (wassup) and filling a wood with thinner trees (italian patient).
Wassup hair has a very good texture and quality, and his FU/CM2 (no. follicular per square centimeter) is high, while the italian patient has a limited thin donor area and his FU/cm2 is low.

This is a very good question.

why do some individuals seem to get better results than others?

The main reasons are a difference in hair mass transferred and the degree of hair loss. Some people have thicker hair shafts and more hairs per graft. Some people have less hair loss. Some individuals have more procedures and as a result, more grafts. all of these work toward producing a greater hair mass and a better result.

wassup had far more procedures. wassup has far less hair loss. thus he has better coverage. Anyone can achieve more coverage simply by having more grafts performed. of course eventually the donor area may run out. Then your only option is to add body hair.

a class 6 will have 200 to 250 square centimeters of hair loss. a class 5 may have up to 180 square centimeters. a class 4 will have 70 to 100 square centimeters of hair loss. this is a major difference. It also a reason to strongly consider FIT for advanced degrees of hair loss becasue shorter hair is going to look more natural when you have less hair on top of your scalp. with a strip procedure you cannot do this becasue your strip scar will be visible.

Orrible,

You're back! Smile

I am adding up the numbers on the surgical sheet now. I think he had 7,354 total grafts moved to his recipient over 2 surgeries. Looks like 4,802 were scalp FIT and 2,552 were BHT/FIT.

In addition to the transplant to the scalp, Dr. Cole did 1,369 BHT into the Italian patient's donor area.
