I am a 30 year old police officer, no quite sure on the lingo of hair loss, but I feel it affects my life and job every day. I would say that I am a class 3, I have the two car garage and a bit of a horse shoe on the top but it is still thick enough to hide. I take propecia, rogaine and use toppik every day. I have consulted with bosley (who blows) and Dr. Leonard who seemed good and I have seen his work only on one person (which looked good). I wanted to know what I am looking at price wise and graft wise, to have my hair line thickened up and possibly filled up in the crown. I am also wondering about some other doctors that have done good work because I am willing to travel, oh ya one other thing........ I am in the publics eye every single day, so how long will I need for recovery so it wont be noticable? and this picture is not me....... but this is about the stage I am in http://k43.pbase.com/u5/dpitron/large/875252.1010192_IMG.jpg

thanks, self esteem issues

Rowdyone82,

It is good that you are using propecia and Rogaine together; they tend to have a synergistic effect. 30–years-old is an ok time to begin to consider HT surgery.

One thing to ask your self is if you want a STRIP or a FIT. During a strip harvest a long strip of skin is excised from the back of the head and follicles are then dissected out of the strip. In our office this is done under total microscopic control (and this is important for graft yeild!). The down side is recovery time, possible scalp tightness, and a permanent linear strip scar on the back of the head. We do FIT – Follicular Isolation Technique – also. This surgery involves taking follicular groups from the donor area one a time. It is a more elegant procedure and since there is no donor strip scar to content with, patients are able to clip there hair very short with out any evident of surgical intervention.

If you want the freedom to clip your hair short or are worried about donor scarring, FIT is usually the way to go.

You referenced Dr. Leonard. Is this one from RI? If so, I believe he does the only strip harvest and I am not certain what sort of microscopic control are employed with his technique. You need to research, research, research. If you are from the RI, it is good that you are willing to travel for the best possible result. Since you are interested in some referrals from our office and outside, I would recommend Dr. Cole (my employer) or Dr. Brad Wolf for Strip surgery. If you need FIT or some iteration of it (and you may well at your age) the main choices would be Dr. Cole or Ray Woods.

I was unable to open you photos. Regarding your question about recovery: there are no bandages involved in our procedure; the incisions over the scalp are tiny and heal on there own. With a cutting edge HT surgery, you should need 1-2 weeks to cosmetically recover save for some possible lingering pinkness. As for physical recovery, you should be up and about the following day or the day after, no problem.
