Dr Cole,

I was wondering how much the skin around the follicle had to do with balding.
For example if you saw an 18 year old man who was just starting to lose his hair and you looked at his family and it was obvious that he was going to reach norwood 6/7, and you moved all the hairs that were destined to fall out, to the back and sides , effectively switching like for like.
ie you remove one from the back of the head and one from the front and swap them all over .
Would the hairs that are hormone dependant which would now be on the sides and back still fall out as if they were on the top of his head still?
Has anyone experimented with this or just assumed it would not work?
ie put a hormone depandent follicle headhair which is destined to die on an arm and watched, over a period of time, to see if it died at the same rate as the ones on the same persons head?
Regards
Jason

Slimcat1969, i was born in 1969...how time goes by Rolling Eyes
To your question,
Hair transplanted from donor area of the scalp will not be susceptible to balding even when it is placed right in the middle of the bald scalp. This new hair maintains the same characteristics of the hair left behind in the donor area no matter where it is transplanted to the scalp.
If you take a hair from your balding area and place it in the donor, it will likely fall out...it's all about the genetics of the hair.
We are doing something that called "hair farming", we take strong hair from the body and rotate it into the donor area (back of the scalp) to fill missing spots of were the grafts had been removed. This can results on a total pristine donor area.

I hope i answered your question.

Hey Slim,

The donor hair taken from the rear of the head is not affected by hormones (DHT) which cause hairloss. This is why hair transplantation does succeed. A hairloss sufferer who must use his or hers donor hair wisely should research how much they will spend for the desireable result they want versus how much donor supply they will expend.
