The other day I was watching "Impact: Stories of Survival" on the Discovery Health Channel. This is a show about people who get into a life-threating accident and survive. This episode contained the story of a woman who was attacked by two dogs that completely ripped off her scalp around the top of her head. Surgeons shaved the hair from the scalp flap, and then in order to reattach it the doctors needed to reconnect the two veins and two arteries to restore the blood supply. The doctors eventually found the two arteries but it took a while to find the veins. Finally they only found one, connected everything and stapled her up. It took a few hours before she finally had her scalp again. (Veins are the ones returning the blood to the heart, right? If not I got that backwards.)

What I found interesting was that the hair didn't start growing back until 3 months after the attack - the very same amount of time it's supposed to take for hair transplants to begin regrowing. I found it very interesting that in both situations the follicles went dormant for the same amount of time. What is it about 3 months that's so magical to scalp hair?

FYI: The woman in the attack survived just fine and her hair seemed to return completely. With her hairstyle you'd never know anything ever happened to her.

Steve,

That is interesting. In her case it might have had something to do with the sudden loss and then regaining of her blood supply. I am not sure, but I do agree it is interesting.
Regards,
