Donor Recharging

PDF Print E-mail
There is often a concern that the “donor” area may be depleted, or that too many grafts will be removed, leading to a thin look. Over-harvesting may occur if the patient has very low donor density to begin with, but demands hair transplant surgery. If an inexperienced surgeon does not realize the consequences of aggressive, early hair transplantation. The patients with fairly advanced hair loss will often find themselves in a balancing act between adding enough hair to the balding area, and leaving enough in the donor region to avoid a thin appearance in the back and on the sides.
There are a number of advantages to using donor recharging, which is a technique for partial donor replacement. Body hair can be extracted and used to fill in gaps in the donor area where scalp hair has been harvested. This is a great use for body hair; it helps avoid the appearance of thinning in the back and sides of the head, it adds back some of the pigment that is lost when scalp hair is taken, and it may allow for more scalp hair to be taken in the future if the balding process advances.
In addition, it may help lessen the appearance of any “white dotting” that remains where scalp hair is harvested. Of course an irregular pattern of graft removal minimizes the “white dotting” as well.  This hair transplant procedure is ideal for those with more advanced degrees of hair loss- those who wish to get the maximal amount of scalp hair from their scalp donor area.  This lack of pigment and of blood circulation in the skin is often mistaken for tiny scars in the donor area. When body hair is placed there, the pigment and renewed blood flow may help diminish even this minimal change to the donor region. This is just one more option that we can offer hair loss sufferers.
