The strip technique is a method of treating hair loss by obtaining hair grafts to place in the balding areas. It is done by using various blades to cut out a strip of scalp from the back and/or sides of the head; this strip is then “slivered” into small units which are further cut up into the individual follicular units (natural groups of hairs) using microscopes (at least they are used in the best clinics!). Then the surgeon sews up or staples up the wound, which hopefully will heal into a thin line scar. Strip harvesting for hair transplant surgery has been around in various forms for several decades; only in the 1990’s did using a single blade become the normal practice, which is a big improvement over older techniques for treating hair loss using more than one blade. Regardless of the number of blades used, one of the biggest drawbacks to strip is the linear (straight across) scar. There is no way to predict the width of a scar though they will generally be ½ a centimeter (about 1/5th of an inch) or thinner. The most common width is 2 to 3 millimeters. The only real advantage for this method of treating hair loss is that more hair can be taken in a shorter time, and it is somewhat less expensive than CIT. Many individuals are quite happy with their strip scar, however, but some grow to regret them as their hair loss progresses. One must bear in mind that the length of the hair must be kept long enough to cover the strip scar so very short hair styles may become impossible for many how choose the strip hair transplant technique. This is a very good way to quickly treat hair loss with a large number of grafts in a short span of time. |
