Hair Transplant

Overview

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure during which a doctor removes hair from the so-called permanent area in the back and sides, and transfers or transplants it into the top and crown areas, which are vulnerable to hair loss. The hair transplant surgeon has special training in the treatment of hair loss from any and all conditions, and many of them do ONLY hair transplant surgery. The hair loss may be due to a variety of causes, but by far the most common is androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness (which may occur in females, despite the name).
   
There are, and have been, many different techniques used to perform hair transplant surgery; the most common at this point in time is strip surgery, which takes a long piece of scalp from the donor area, which is cut up to produce grafts of one or more hairs for use in the hair restoration process. However, there has emerged, in the first decade of the new millennium, a revolutionary technique that threatens to make the old strip technique obsolete. This is CIT, or the Cole Isolation Technique, named after Dr. John P. Cole, the hair transplant surgeon who originated it.

CIT requires specialized tools and techniques, which have been developed by Cole over the past 6 or 7 years. These tools are patented or patent pending, and they allow the hair transplant surgeon to choose, in a very precise manner, only the individual follicular groups (hair groups) that are the correct and appropriate size for the area being transplanted; this selectivity is not possible with strip surgery. Another outstanding benefit of CIT is that, unlike the strip procedure, it does not leave a linear (straight line) scar across the back and sides of the head. These scars may be very unsightly, and they have the potential to widen over time, which can in some cases be actually deforming.

In short, CIT is currently the pinnacle of hair transplant surgery. In the future, it will be the standard by which all other hair restoration techniques will be judged. The results have been uniformly excellent, with many patients ecstatic to see their new hair where formerly only wispy, thinning hair or bald scalp existed!
