| Read Original Post (Sunday August 10, 2003 11:28 PM) | | | Just want to share my experience regarding my consultation with Dr. Cole this past Sat. After sitting in NYC traffic for 2 hours I finally made it to the office about 15 min late. Thankfully, Dr. Cole was also running late so I didn't feel so bad. It also gave me time to sit and talk with his assistant Christina who was very friendly and easy-going. (not hard to look at either). Now any of you who have been to the NYC location know that the office isn't set up to impress anyone. It is purely functional and made me feel like I was in my general practitioners office. If I didn't know so much about Dr. Cole from the internet I would have left wondering if it was a "fly-by-night" operation. The truth is that the office is not fully up and running yet, which is something that they are working on, so I'll give him a break on that. When Dr. Cole came out to greet me any apprehensions I had were quickly resolved. He is very personable, and if I met him out in the street I'd never guess he was a HT doc. After exchanging a few pleasantries he took me back to one of the operating rooms and we started talking business. He gave me a quick once over and then gave me the good and the bad. THE GOOD: I have better than average density in the donor area (200/cm2) and better than average diameter (80). He classified me as NW 3A moving to 5A, but he doesn't see me progressing beyond that, which means I shouldn't require too much body hair to complete the job. He doesn't see the need to remove any of my previous grafts, of which he feels I had excellent yield, and my donor scar is small and healed very well. THE BAD: I have a very tight scalp which rules out any mega strip sessions, however in his opinion this contributed to my fine scar. He says that the tight scalp = fine scar as long as a reasonable amt. of donor was removed. Also he noticed miniaturization in the crown (NW5) area, which means I will someday have to deal with that. That said, he suggested FIT which I get the impression he is suggesting to a lot of his patients. It seems as though he is really embracing it, and has a lot of faith in its results. He mentioned that he is pressing Dr. Rose to accept and move towards FIT and is making progress with him, so we may soon get another FIT doc in the picture. I'm looking at about 1500 grafts for now over 2 sessions. To answer some questions asked by a couple of guys in my previous thread. 1) Dr. Cole will take hair from just about any reasonable place on the body, including lower abdomen. Just not the "obvious" areas. 2) His opinion on Gho's HM is "I'll believe it when I see it". He is open minded but wants to see facts before drawing conclusions. 3) I never directly asked him about # of grafts/session, but based on our discussion I believe 1200 isn't out of the question. He suggested 800 in 1 session for me. I'd rather not totally shave my head) 4) I stand corrected, Dr. Cole does use technicians, however 2 of them are drs. They will plant grafts, but only Dr. Cole removes them via FIT. 5) He feels that he makes positive progress with every procedure, so you will see improvements in the results by waiting 6 months. He mentioned that he discovered 2 "new things" just this past week, 1 of which "may" lead to improved results. In addition to that I should mention that Dr. Cole performed his 1st FIT procedure in NYC this past weekend, and is planning to start scheduling FIT surgeries for NYC in the very near future. Maybe I'll be the next. Also for you H&W guys, he had very positive things to say about both of those guys. He disagrees with using all lateral slits, but can't argue with their results which he agrees are top notch. He also would not discourage me or anyone else from going to H&W if a large strip session was the order of the day. I'd like to address something that someone previously posted about Dr. Cole being arrogant. That I believe is the wrong term. Confident is much more suitable. Arrogance is blind, and confidence is based on facts and knowledge. Dr. Cole will make some statements that could be mistaken for arrogance, but he always follows up with facts. This is when he sheads his mellow exterior and gets serious, and I like that. To summarize, I had a very positive experience with Dr. Cole, and I would suggest that anyone considering FIT/FUE to meet with him. IMHO out of the 3 drs currently performing FIT/FUE regularly he gives the best overall results. I've seen some questionable aesthetic results out of Woods (donor is pure artistry though), and Jones is real close (TKDkid's last session looks great), but Cole is already there. (again just my opinion) This is why I chose to speak with him, and in doing so I was just looking for flaws, a reason to take him off my list. I didn't find any. So at this point I can say I'm 99% sure he'll be my doc. And as an added bonus, I may not even have to travel. |

"Sheik" testimonial on Hairlosshelp.com

| (Friday, August 01, 2003 9:01 PM) | | Read Original Post | | | Hello all I just returned from two days with Dr. Cole and his staff just outside Atlanta. For those of you who don't know me, I used to post a lot on Hairsite a couple of years ago. I still check these forums regularly, but don't post much anymore. Here is my story. I had a bad HT experience from 1993-94, had 280 "mini" grafts put in by Dr. Kelso from Chambers Hair clinic, and they looked like shit from the moment they went in. I don't want to get into the whole experience there, but let me say that the last ten years have been every bit as frustrating for me as they have been for Benny over at Hairsite, and everything he has posted there about his struggles with this devastating condition goes double for me, only he has said it ways that I could never find the words to be able to do. Anyway, after enormous research on the web (where was it in 93) and numerous consultations with "leading" practitioners in the field, I finally decided to see Dr. Cole in January/February of this year. At that consultation, Dr. Cole did a thorough examination of my head, and then he asked me a question no other MD I had seen up to that point had asked. He said, "If I could bring you back to where you where before you had those transplants, would it bother you to essentially be a Norwood 7? I mean, if you could shave your head again? (I couldn't do this because of the donor scarring and the pluggy look of the grafts, which looked even worse when shaved down) I immediately said yes, as the biggest regret of the past ten years in my life has been having undergone this monstrous procedure in the first place (as any bad HT patient will tell you, it is far better to be bald than disfigured). At that time he explained his FIT technique, but also explained that at that point he could only do a couple hundred at a time, and that it might take 5-6 sessions to complete the job. He also said that he wanted me to get a second opinion, and sent me over to see a well respected doctor in my area. It took over two months to get an appointment to see this doctor. This doctor was doing exclusively strip harvest ( I had had three of those already) and suggested another strip procedure of 1500-2000 grafts, to be implanted among the already growing grafts. This was the standard line I had heard from the other MDs I had consulted, so I wasn't too impressed with his opinion. He also pooh-poohed the feasibility of FIT, although I believe he did so without an ulterior motive, as he had no need to try and hard sell me, his own HT practice was so busy that I couldn't have gotten in for a procedure, even if I had wanted to, for 4-5 months following the initial consult. I then called Cole back, talked to him, had my wife talk to him, as she was very concerned ( by the way, this conversation took place at 10:30 at night, after he had just gotten out of surgery for the day, and lasted for almost 45 minutes) then talked to him again for another 40 minutes and then booked a date to see him IN Atlanta for surgery on July 30/31. At this point (May of '03) he still wasn't sure of which was to go with me, whether to pull out all the old grafts or just do fit and "fill in the spaces", and we left it to the point that we would make that decision when I got to Atlanta. In the meantime, and I kept hearing this over the internet in these forums, Dr. Cole had improved his fit procedure to the point where he could do 750-800 per day, and by the time I got to Atlanta, he had it to where he could easily do over 1000/day, depending on each individual and how easily the FIT could be extracted from each persons head. This changed my entire perspective on what should be done, and I believe his too. He sat me down when I got to his office and consulted with Dr. Rose, who also happened to be there, and offered me three options. (Dr. Rose actually drew in the landmarks for the reconstruction of my hairline, should I decide to go that route) 1) plug removal with the removed plugs being cut into follicular units and re-implanted on the top of the head where they had come from, and additional FIT done to fill in the scars in the back of my head, thereby allowing me to shave my head pretty closely; 2)FIT, in which case I would need at least 3000 follicular units to transplant around the pluggy grafts in the front of my head 3) A strip procedure for the same number of grafts, which I immediately vetoed, but which he explained that he was not recommending either, but which he felt that ethically he had to offer me. After considering the alternatives, I decided on #1. Dr. Cole had explained that he felt that this was the best option for me, but that for him, it would mean the most work, as it was a very tiring and tedious business to dig the old plugs out, due to things like scar tissue and the the fact that the implanting of the plugs meant that it would make it very difficult to "trace" the root of the hair follicle. However he was more than willing to take on the task, and the amount of progress he had made in FIT procedure meant that he thought he could get it done in the two days he had booked me for down in Atlanta. We then got down to business. I wound up being in the chair for almost twelve hours that first day, as Dr. Cole painstakingly dug out the Follicular units from the old grafts. He did not do this by merely pulling the entire graft out (some of which had over 9 FU in each graft, so much for the so called "mini graft) but using magnification, was able to pull individual follicular units fro each graft, leaving some fo the FUs in place, and removing others, so that the remaining FUs looked natural, meaning that they were now 1-2 hairs each. This was really painstaking work, and he would do a bunch of them, hand them over to the techs to be separated, go into the next room and work on another patient while they were doing that, then come in and so some more. As I said, it took about ten hours to complete this, and I was actually in the chair for about twelve hours altogether. At the end of this day virtually all of the old plugs were out of my head, split into follicular units, and re-implanted onto the top of my head. Day two started early as well, and was dedicated to working on the scar area. This ran across the back of my head in three very closely spaced rows, from just behind my ears. I would estimate that each scar was about 1/2 the width of a pencil. FIT was done to obtain sufficient donor hairs to fill in this scarred area, and after looking at the top of my head on day two, some were also done to put a little more filling on portions of that area that would help make things look a little better there. This is where i could really notice the improvement in his FIT extraction speed, as he was really able to knock these out, as compared to the painstaking digging he had to do on the old plugs. We were done with this at about 3:30. When I looked in the mirror after the first day, I literally could not believe my eyes. There instead of the porcupine quill looking pluggy grafts, between the spots of blood and the magic marker landmarks drawn in by Dr. Rose, were single and double hair grafts that all looked perfectly natural. It seemed my nightmare might actually be over. And in my mind, looking at it one day later, even if everyone of those FITs fell out tomorrow, one thing is for sure, those goddamn HT plugs are gone forever. Of course it is going to take time to see the final result, this stuff has all got to grow in, I'm only anxious about one thing, and that is what growth rate I will get in the scar area. If only 1/2 of the implants grow, I think I will still be in good enough shape to have the scar hidden, but only time will tell. An interesting aspect of this whole experience is that Dr. Cole had two physicians from Cyprus in town to train with him, and while he was doing my procedure, I got to hear him explain in great detail how and why he was doing everything he did. There is some advantage to being a kind of lab rat, I guess. I did ask Dr. Cole what exactly had led him to the increased skill he now has in doing FIT, and he replied "Experience". He stated that the more he did it, the better and better he got, and the better he could design the tools he used. He explained to Dr. Rose and the Cypriote doctor that he was creating another punch that would allow him do extractions even quicker, this had nothing to do with the width of the punch, and I don't want to give it away without his permission, but it sounded really exciting. He stated several times to both Dr. Rose, Dr. Bridges, and the other doctors that he was dedicated to finding a way to make FIT easy and affordable and teachable to other doctors. He does not sound to me like he is hoarding this info. I also met Dr. Bridges while there, both he and R. rose came into the OR and spent about 15-20 minutes just talking to me, wanting to hear about my previous HT and, significantly to me, about the impact it had had on my life. Also Dr. Bridges showed me the result of the HT he had done by Dr. Cole, and I have to tell you, I have never seen a better hairline in my life, and I have spent the last ten years researching this stuff. Ialso also stressed to good doctors how much we needed them to participate in these forums, how much hope it gave to people like myself to have doctors come on here, and show us that we are more than just $ in the bank to them, to spend a little time with the forlorn souls on these boards. Well that is it for now, I'm kind of sleepy, I'm taking prednisone for possible swelling and Vicodin for pain, although there has been absolutely no swelling and the pain and soreness is minimal, so I'm a little punchy. Hope this all made sense, as I remember other details, I will add them to this collection, if anyone wants any other info, I'll be glad to help them out, I can be reached at sheik3@msn.com. And thanks to DJ, who had a long talk with me before I went in, hey dude email me your phone number and I'll give you a personal update on how it went. And of course, a big thank you to our father in heaven, who made all of this possible. God Bless you all. ------------------------- sheik |

| (Saturday, April 19, 2003 5:00 PM ) | | | "I agree Poet, I have met Dr Cole, and his words reflect caring and heart. He cares for the bald guy. No one knows why baldness seems to affect some men and others just don't seem to care. I will never forget the time I saw Ed Harris talking about losing his hair with tears in his eyes, and Will Patton was deeply affected by the loss of his hair. Many are! Most are! Yes, some say they don't care, but lets look at that..... ?? Hair is normal.... or you would be born without it, so people want to be normal. Nothing Wrong with that. I believe the guys that say they don't care are just doing what they need to do, need to say, to survive their feeling. Who doesn't want to have a choice? Bald men have no choice, they go bald, and that is that, unless they do something about it. If you have hair you can always shave it.....and be bald. So looking at this, I believe there aren't many that don't care. Get by, get through it, yes.... many do and have successful lives.... they push through with their wills and determination. Lots of woman tell their guys "oh it's no big deal" men don't need it. Well, ask a woman what they would take for their hair? I have asked woman how much they would sell their hair for??? I say, If I give you a million right now for your hair and you will be bald, will you take it? They always say " NO", so it's just more of their saying don't be a cry baby, be a man. My point is people care when they lose their hair; the time they don't care is when they are not losing it! I have met Dr. Cole and he cares and he isn't losing his hair. He is trying to change an industry, a dirty industry and he is practically alone in this endeavor. So, I support him 100%. He is my hero and I believe he will change it, with Woods and Jones and a few others, also. Maybe, he was into money at one time, but now he's into what's right and he is pushing forward with doing the right thing. He speaks for me and many others who suffered, and are suffering bad surgery, and cared and do care about losing their hair. Lots of people are always quick to point out all the successful people when something bothers you, to poo poo your feelings, to say look they can do it and they are bald, why can't you? They are bald and doing it, stupid! Well, hair loss bothers me! I admit it and I am still a man, more of a man for owning it. WHO CARES WHO IT DOESN'T BOTHER!!! This forum is for the guys that it does bother. Cole is for the guys that it does bother, and what he puts on his Website is for the guys that it does bother. Guys that it doesn't bother won't go to his Website or here....they have better things to do with their time. Cole dropped his prices again this week because he cares and fUE is getting easier for him. Compare him to Woods, who goes up and keeps going up, and you have to go to Australia! There is no comparison when it comes to price. Cole could charge more! Why isn't he? Yes, Woods has a longer time doing FUE, but Cole will catch him fast, I believe, in technique and do much better price wise. I believe in his intentions! You can reason with him, and he listens and if need be he will work with you on price like a human being with compassion, not Woods. That tells you who cares. Not talk. Action! Just an opinion. dj " | "Poet" reply | | "I have great respect for those who are bald and proud. I definitely don't think everyone has to have hair to feel the way I have described. I came to the conclusion I did and went down a long arduous road to get there. As for Dr.Cole this is a man I respect so I will defend. Yes he is running a business and some marketing is involved, but I don't think his claims are ridiculous and it seems logical one in the business of hair restoration would give some thought and even write about why their patients come to them. Many bald men are unhappy, do have low self esteem and can't get women and jobs because of this. I think he was trying to validate the concerns not exploit them. I give him the favor of glass full for the following reason. I experienced some serious shock loss after visiting Dr.Rob Jones. A huge controversy erupted, about devil's halo, permanent hair loss and a plethora of other things I wish to forget. Though there were many who consoled me during my time of grief, by far Dr.Cole was the most selfless and helpful. I was so panicked I immediately wanted some type of surgery to rectify the situation, I was very vulnerable. He explained with logic and compassion steps I could take to help recover my hair, and reasons that it was likely to return. He talked with me for several hours on several occasions. I know he has been very busy lately and is difficult to book time with and there have been scheduling faux paus. I will leave that to him to address, but consider this issue distinct from the accusations that he is another well greased used car salesman. He and everyone in this industry has agendas and wishes to promote themselves. That said and as stated he was able to put this aside and assist me when I needed it. He takes hours to give lengthy and well thought out posts on this and other message boards. He believes in Dr.Woods and earnestly speaks his mind about this. I am not saying he is perfect but I think he is an honorable man." |

"Shears" testimonial on Hairlosshelp.com

| Read Original Post (Tuesday April 08, 2003 4:46 PM) | | | Hello all, I've wanted to share my recent experience with Dr. Cole in Atlanta, but my life has been extraordinarily busy since returning from Atlanta. So without further ado: After researching FIT/FUE and the associated doctors online, I chose a couple to contact. As I wrote in an older post, I spoke with Dr. Cole on the phone and he absolutely won me over with his personality, intelligence, and true interest and helpful concern for me and my situation. I felt very good and fortunate after speaking with him and later set up my 2-day appointment for an FIT procedure. I have to say first off that Dr. Cole and his staff are very personable and very, very helpful and really take care of you. When I arrived at the airport in Atlanta, Dr. Cole's office had arranged a limo service to pick me up and bring me to my hotel in Alpharetta (35 min drive). The start of my procedure of 1,200 - 1,800 FITs was to start the following day. On the day of the procedure, Dr. Cole and some of his staff were just arriving from Washington DC by plane that morning and then went directly to their office to get to work. I then received my phone call when they were ready to go at and one of his staff drove to pick me up. I met with Dr. Cole and everyone and they immediately went to work. I felt very relaxed at his office, mostly due to the fact that everyone there were so personable that it felt like I was visiting friends in Georgia. Dr. Cole examined me for FIT capacity and I passed with flying colors. I experienced only a brief moment of pain (like a needle poke) when they were setting up the anesthesia, and from then on I felt nothing. Dr. Cole and his staff then worked with me up until 11pm at night. I was very amazed at how hard working and dedicated he and everyone was. When the night was over, Dr. Cole and Christina (staff) drove me back to my hotel -- with Dr. Cole bringing his suitcase from his recent trip. I couldn't help but feel so appreciative for how hard everyone worked that day. The next day (Saturday) at 9am I was picked up from the hotel and everyone went right back to work. Once again I was amazed at how hard everyone works and what sacrifices they make in their schedules and lives to take care of patients that come to see Dr. Cole. My hotel didn't offer anything decent to eat for breakfast, but Christina offered to pick up breakfast for me at the office. Throughout the weekend, Dr. Cole and Christina continued to offer to bring me meals during the day. Absolutely kind and wonderful and I am very much thankful for their kindness. The day was spent doing more FIT and watching several movies. Dr. Cole and his staff (John, Christina, Patrick, AT) were very friendly and entertaining to speak with throughout the day and made me feel very comfortable during the long procedure. -- On a brief note, FIT takes considerably more effort and time and Dr. Cole is meticulous and a work horse through it all. FIT is definitely worth it. I swear to never have a strip surgery for as long as I live. I had a previous strip surgery done 5-6 years ago for about 115 grafts. Come to find out they could have used 700 grafts by the size of the scar that was left behind. -- During the middle of the 2nd day, Dr. Cole realized that he wanted me to stay another day so he could complete everything he set out to do. Christina then took care of me and re-scheduled my plane back home and set reserved a hotel room for me. When the day was done, I went to the hotel and was ready to go again the next day, bright and early. On Sunday, everyone was back in the office at 9-10am (wow!) and they went back to work. By mid-afternoon the total FIT procedure was completed and I was briefed on how to take care of myself from then on. I felt next to no pain, even during the following days after. Dr. Cole gave me all the necessities to take care of myself and after everything was said and done, I put on my new hat I bought and then the limo service picked me up and drove me back to the airport for my flight home. Dr. Cole has put in tremendous research and study in the hairline. When examining the my new hairline, I can see why Dr. Cole gives it some irregularity because it makes it more natural looking. The thing that always catches my eye when I generally see other HT pictures is how perfect their hairlines are shaped. They almost look like someone drew it on their head. It looks so unnatural. My overall experience with Dr. Cole was wonderful. I feel so very lucky and fortunate to have found him and have a procedure with him and his staff. Everyone at his office was fantastic and did so much to care of me. I have to say that Dr. Cole worked was more concerned about my personal well-being than my own family physician! During the whole procedure, Dr. Cole worked constantly and side-by-side with his staff making sure everything went exactly as he wanted. I just can't thank Dr. Cole enough for all that he did and gave to me. I will definitely go back to him if and when I have the opportunity. I will leave everyone with this: If you are interested in a HT procedure and if you can, please avoid strip-procedures, and most importantly, if Dr. Cole isn't at the top of your list of consideration, then you are doing yourself a tremendous disservice. I highly recommend that you at least speak to Dr. Cole for numerous reasons. He's a very, very good doctor and a great caring one at that. ------------------------- NW 2.5 with diffused thinning in a NW 5a pattern. I saw the grafts and they looked very good in my mind, then he Explained me that I'm in the 20% patients that Fit doesn't work on them so well. Actually. and with this I will give you something to question about, he told me that from 10 Graft only 2 were not "PERFECT" in is mind!!! he could Easily go on to a 1000 grafts FIT Procedure... he said that with his new tool he will be able to do that. the donor area is healing.. in fact nobody can tell I had something, the few grafts that Dr cole has implanted will grow.. I can fell the hair pumping from the grafts. we decided to meet and try FIT again, Dr Cole is my top choice and nothing will convince me to go to another doctor, he also gave me an offer I cant refuse." | "WhatEverItTakes" reply | | "Great! I am going in to see Cole in Atlanta, his main headquarters on Feb. 24, 2003. I have some repair work. I will keep you all updated. I am considering posting like Jot. I have thus far been most impressed by Dr. Cole. I am confident is his ability to achieve both the extraction and even more importantly, the end front result. I have been researching this for a long time. Woods may, indeed, have the best extraction, however, I have not been as impressed with his hairlines. They are good, but not great. Dr. Cole and Hasson/Wong have impressed me the most with their incredible hairlines from numerous pictures. It's a 2 fold process, and Cole, thus far, seems like the best choice in my opinion to achieve my goals. Great News Blondy, I can tell you are a caring individual. And POET, I love your posts, since you have been to just about everybody, your opinion is always well respected. Keep Punching Guys! " |

@ E-Mail Testimonial Hair is growing like crazy -- even in the last 2 weeks there's been a serious increase... Forget about NYC, I'll just come down to Atlanta -- it's best to go where you're comfortable and your team knows the deal. Esp. since I'm asking you to do something so unusual. So I'll be down in Alpharetta Jan 8-9. I think by next fall I may have one of the best looking HT's in the world. --Thanks for sticking with a demanding customer. Happened to see Benny's posts. I was moved by them. That, to my mind, is what a *real* doctor can do for someone. Heal them. Sincerely,

@ E-Mail Testimonial I wanted to let you know how I'm doing 1 week post-op! FIT is an amazing process. After going thru (2) 4 MM plug procedures & (2) strip procedures, I can't believe the difference. I had practically zero soreness in the donor area & was able to sleep without pain. The recipient area felt good also--at this point, most of the crusts have fallen off. As I mentioned to you, I returned to work the next day, as if nothing happened. That certainly wasn't the case in any of my other procedures. It's too bad I came along too early to take full advantage of this great technology. I also want to thank you for your valuable time & effort performing the additional procedure for me. I know I'll be beaming when the grafts begin to grow. I'm not sure what yield I may have left in my donor area, but, I'd like to pursue the possibility of working on my crown when my finances allow. In the interim, I'm going to enjoy having more hair! Thanks again for being so gracious!

@ E-Mail Testimonial | Hi Dr. Cole: I wanted to let you know how I'm doing 1 week post-op! If I get the chance to get to Atlanta this summer, I'd love to take you up on your Braves/Phillies offer. It would be great to see the Braves new ballpark, enjoy the ballgame, & talk baseball with you. Thanks again for being so gracious! Sincerely, Mike P. S. Please pass on my thanks to Patrick, John, and all for their help! |
