Body Hair transplantation (BHT) is a procedure that has gained recognition during the early 2000’s; it was pioneered by Dr. Ray Woods in Australia in the 1990s. As of today, there are only a few doctors in the US and overseas who are performing this newer technique for the treatment of hair loss. There are several reasons for this: like CIT, it requires specials instruments and is time consuming. It is also new, and the results are unpredictable. In addition, the results are almost never as good as with the same amount of scalp hair transplant grafts. It is difficult to know who will have a good result from BHT and who will not. We now know that transplanting lower densities of hair tends to give a better growth rate in some patients. We feel patients should first use scalp hair as much as possible and turn to body hair transplants as a last resort; for many this is their only option. Think of it as “filler hair”, designed to help increase the density of a scalp hair transplant when there is not an abundant scalp hair supply. Many times, it is a good idea to try a small “test case” using just 50 to 500 or so body hair transplant grafts to see what sort of growth yield the patient will have, before considering larger sessions. This body hair transplant test allows the patient to evaluate The doctor's opinion of the body hair transplant prior to scheduling for a larger procedure. Body hair transplants tend to produce a subtle result in some. Some with this subtle result will be highly impressed while others will not be as impressed with the results. It is important to note that some patients have been highly impressed by their body hair transplants, while others have been disappointed. Still it offers hope to those without hope. When the traditional scalp donor hair supply is depleted, there is very little additional option to many men with hair loss. |
